NASA SERIES: ASTER
— The NASSA Series: art inspired by outer space. Each final painting was inspired by a photo posted to the NASA Instagram account*.
— “In this stunning image of southwest Morocco, we see the gorgeous Anti-Atlas Mountains that were formed as a result of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates colliding about 80 million years ago. It was a massive collision that ended up completely destroying the Tethys Ocean. The photo was taken in infrared light — which is invisible to the naked eye — to highlight the different layers of rock and sediment, giving the tie-dye appearance. The layers are made up of limestone, sandstone, clay stone, and gypsum. The image was acquired on November 5, 2007, by the ASTER instrument on the Terra satellite. Credit: NASA/METI/AIST/Japan Space Systems, and U.S./Japan ASTER Science Team.” To view the original inspiration photo/post for this painting, click here.
